Outrage at web divorces

Instant divorce via the internet has created a furore in Portugal, where the procedure is usually lengthy and expensive. A two-page form can now be downloaded from the net and emailed to the authorities. Papers confirming a marriage has been dissolved can be available within an hour.

Outraged conservatives in the country have condemned the website service, set up by Pedro Miguel Januário Lourenço and his London-based legal company PMJL. Carlos Aguiar Gomes, of Portugal's Family Association, described the website as 'deplorable'.

Lourenço said: 'It is quick, straightforward and free, doing away with expensive legal fees.'
